Current Sunday School:

Frederick Buechner (pronounced BEEK-nur) is a Presbyterian minister who obtained his Bachelor of Divinity from Union Theological Seminary in 1958. He is the author of over 30 works of fiction and non-fiction. Buechner’s book Godric was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Throughout his writings Buechner returns to the theme that it is important for individuals to look at their own lives and through that view, they will see God. According to Buechner in his autobiography Telling Secrets:

"My story is important, not because it is mine God knows but because if I tell it anything like right, the chances are you will recognize in many ways that is it also yours. Perhaps nothing is more important than we keep tract of these stories you and I of who we are and where we have come from and the people we have met along the way because it is precisely through these stories and all their peculiarity as I have long believed and often said that God makes himself known to each of us most powerfully and personally."

This year’s Lenten series therefore will focus on this directive from Buechner to examine our individual lives. A collection of Buechner’s sermons entitled “Secrets in the Dark” will serve as background material for this class. As we read through sermons that make up this book such as The Magnificent Defeat, Faith, Hope, Love, and Adolescence and the Stewardship of Pain, the class will focus on both reading his sermons and discussing how they relate to each members personal story.
